Building a home is a big step and an important investment. You want to be sure your new home meets your needs and fulfills your dreams while staying within your budget. But sometimes it’s hard to picture what you’re going to get before the home is built.

“Most of us can’t picture a home by looking at a floor plan,” says Hunter Skogman, Project Manager of Skogman Homes. “That’s why we have four model homes, which are open daily for people to walk through.”

Skogman’s model homes allow visitors to walk through the home and feel the space and size of the rooms, and also see the quality of construction. The home at 6611 Underwood Avenue SW is a model in the Stoney Point neighborhood but can be built most anywhere in the corridor.
This home has great curb appeal. With its peaked roofline, white-painted columns, and unique arched entry to the porch, it welcomes visitors to the front door. The stone and siding exterior is attractive and low-maintenance.

Inside the home, dark-stained birch floors lead from the entryway into the carpeted great room. Here, natural light spills in through large windows, brightening the cozy living area. Ten-foot ceilings in the great room allow for the windows to be topped by transoms.

In the corner of the great room is a stacked stone fireplace with a dark-stained wood mantel and surround. Next to the fireplace is a flat-screen TV mounted on the wall. “Many of our buyers want their homes wired for the latest technology trends,” says Skogman. “For example, the great room features an iPad docking station that connects to the television and the homes stereo system. Many electrical outlets also have USB ports for charging mobile devices.”

Open to the great room is the home’s kitchen. White-painted cabinets make the most of the natural light, and gleaming quartz countertops complement the look. A big kitchen island has enough room for a family to sit and eat a meal under brushed nickel pendant lights. The built-in fridge and corner pantry right at hand make meal preparation a breeze.

Though most families like to eat informally in the kitchen, this home also features room for a table adjacent to the kitchen island. Sliding doors lead to a patio. “On a different lot—one with a walk-out lower level—this would be a raised deck,” Skogman explains. Each basic home plan can work for many different lots.

Also on this home’s main floor are three bedrooms. On one side of the home are two bedrooms that share a full bath. On the other side is the master suite. The peaceful bedroom looks out over the home’s back yard. The spa-like master bath features his and hers vanities topped with cultured marble, a separate stool with pocket door, and a big tiled shower. Off the master bath is the spacious walk-in closet. Also on this level are the laundry, near the master suite, and a drop zone, right off the three-car garage.

The lower level of this home has a large finished area, perfect for a rec room. At one side is a fully-equipped bar, and a half-wall features the same stacked stone used in the main floor’s fireplace. Nearby there’s a full bath. This model home has an office on this level, but that room could also be a bedroom. In fact, with some alterations to the floor plan, this lower level could have up to three bedrooms.

Making changes to floor plans is no problem for Skogman Homes. Add a bedroom, change the layout of a kitchen, move a wall—it’s all possible. “We have an in-house draftsperson so we can customize the plans without charging our customers drafting fees,” says Skogman.

Skogman Homes has hundreds of lots available to purchase in many Cedar Rapids, Fairfax, Solon, and North Liberty neighborhoods. If we don’t have a lot that suits your family needs we will build on your lot. “We have an in-house surveyor who can evaluate the lot to make sure there aren’t any unexpected lot preparation costs such as, hauling dirt or large retaining walls,” says Skogman.
