Building a Legacy Home
Jim Sattler Custom Homes

Situated in a spectacular setting atop a wooded hillside, this month’s home makes the most of its location with stunning views out of every window and bright open rooms flooded with natural light. From the moment they decided to build, the homeowners knew they’d work with Jim Sattler Custom Homes to create a legacy home for their family.
Set among the mature oaks and maples, the home has plenty of curb appeal. The exterior, with its peaked roofline, is of warm-colored stone with shake-detailed gables. Graceful arches make an appearance over the bay entrances to the three-car garage and above the broad front porch, which is also flanked by elegant columns.
The etched glass front door leads indoors into a welcoming foyer. Warm red-oak floors contrast with white-painted trim. Just beyond the foyer, through another archway accented with wood columns, is the home’s large family room. Huge windows all along the back of this room and throughout the home give wonderful views of the one-acre wooded property while letting in plenty of light. The family room’s stained coffered ceiling creates a feeling of coziness, as does the wood-burning fireplace at one end. Built-in cabinets with lighted art shelves flank the fireplace and offer storage.
The custom kitchen, adjacent to the family room, is the heart of this home, the perfect place for family to gather or to entertain. A Calcutta marble backsplash brings in shades of white and dove gray that are picked up in the marbled granite countertops. White-painted cabinets complement the dark-stained wood of a generously-sized kitchen island decorated with artistic wood trim accents. Unique matte black and glass pendants help define the space.
The kitchen’s Thermidor range and subzero built-in refrigerator will get plenty of use by the family, and the generous walk-in pantry will keep everything neat. Besides the eating area along the island, there’s space for a big table under a matte black chandelier as well. More windows make the most of the view, and French doors open out onto a large raised deck, should the family want to dine al fresco. For more formal dining, French doors off the family room lead to a sunny formal dining room.
A spacious sunroom, next to the kitchen, offers three walls of windows for spectacular views. It’s at the west end of the home, so sunset viewing is optimal here. A stone fireplace--this one gas-- is topped by a reclaimed wood mantel. Slate-colored tile floors anchor the room.
The master suite, also on this floor, is offset a bit from the house, allowing it to feature windows on three walls, for great light and that beautiful view. The master bath has a large custom walk-in shower, accented in Carerra Marble and glass tiles. Large vanities with quartz counters, heated tile floors, and his and hers walk-in closets make this space luxurious.
Just beyond the master suite are stairs to the bonus room above the garage--it is fitted out with a full bath and will soon have a kitchenette as well. Underneath those stairs, the family dog has his own custom private quarters. Also on this floor are the laundry room, a second bedroom, and a full bath, as well as several storage closets.
An open staircase with unique custom balusters leads down to the home’s lower level. The home is built on a hill, so the lower level is a walk-out, and light streams in from the large windows along the back. Ten-foot ceilings throughout this level give it a spacious feeling. A full wet bar offers another area for entertaining, and a gas fireplace gives a cozy feeling. At one end of the lower level is a nicely-equipped exercise room; at the other are two bedrooms that share a full bathroom, and another room destined to be a theatre room. The family decided to make a spot for it now, and have it finished later.
If this home looks familiar, it’s because it was the Jim Sattler Custom Homes 2014 Parade home. Not only that, it was the Linn County Rural Electric Cooperative Model Home for 2014. Built under stringent directives to conserve energy, it features geothermal heating and cooling and an Energy Star Plus rating.
With all these features and more, it’s clear to see that this Jim Sattler Custom Home will be a well-loved legacy for the family
