Aspen Feel in an Iowa Field

Comfort, convenience and woodland views—all these can make a home into a special retreat, the perfect place to relax with family or entertain guests. This home, located on a wooded cul-de-sac in the beautiful, prestigious Woodmoor neighborhood, offers all that and more. This Aspen-style home was designed to blend sophistication with comfortable everyday living.

As you approach the home, it’s easy to forget that it is in a great location in the corridor--just minutes from Highway 30 with easy access to Cedar Rapids, Mount Vernon, and Iowa City. A short walk from the neighborhood’s private pond, the home backs up to a wooded area. Like all the lots in this neighborhood, this lot covers over two acres of rolling, wooded hills. Dark shingles and earthy stone on the home’s exterior make it fit perfectly with its surroundings. The home features a three-car garage with wood doors, including one extra-high, extra-deep stall for the family’s motor home.

Through the front door is a welcoming foyer, and just beyond that is the home’s centerpiece: a soaring two-story great room with a stunning floor-to-ceiling stacked-stone fireplace. The mantle for this unique fireplace was created locally, and was designed to have a solid, natural look to complement the stacked stone.

Large window walls line the rear of the house, overlooking the wooded lot and letting in natural light. Barbara Green of Interiors by Barbara made sure the home’s interior reflects nature’s palette, so the indoors and outdoors are seamless and compatible. Rough-hewn, dark-stained maple floors flow throughout this main floor of the home, and the striking patterns in the granite countertops in the kitchen pick up the colors of the floor and walls.

Through the kitchen is the home’s spacious four-season sunroom. Large windows look out over the wooded property and let in beautiful natural light. The sunroom’s walls and vaulted ceiling are lined with cedar. The home’s outdoor kitchen—featuring a built-in grill and outdoor refrigerator—are right outside the sunroom, and just a few steps away is a built-in outdoor fireplace with low stone seating walls offering a place to sit and enjoy a gathering of friends and family.

Besides the great room and kitchen, the main floor of this home also has the master suite, which is also designed to make the most of the natural beauty of the home’s setting. Large windows overlook the wooded backyard, and soft, natural colors fill the room; indoors and outdoors are seamless and compatible. One wall of the room features built-in cabinets in warm-stained wood. The master bath has a pebble tile floor that looks like a mountain stream bed with a spa-like tub and walk-in tiled shower. His and hers vanities have their own custom storage cabinets, and there’s an additional walk-in closet with its own window. It is the ultimate retreat.

Fabrics and colors inside the home and on the furniture were chosen for their soft, natural colors and textural appeal. Accessories add natural elements: a foyer table in deeply-textured wood; graceful, birdlike light fixtures; rich silky draperies in soft, natural colors. All of these contribute to the home’s overall style.

Also on this floor is a cozy home office that has a built-in desk, bookcase, cupboards, and a great reading spot near a window for those quiet winter evenings. A laundry room, pantry closet, drop zone, and powder room round out this floor of the home. It’s an empty-nester’s dream, with everything you might need on one floor.

But this home boasts an additional two floors with room for guests or visiting family members. On the second floor, two guest rooms share a full bath. A catwalk that overlooks the great room features built-ins to store books and other mementos. The lower level of the home features an additional guest room and full bathroom as well.

This lower level also expands the home’s space for entertaining. Like the great room above it, the walk-out lower level features large windows that make the most of the wooded view and natural light. There’s a full bar here for entertaining, a large game room, and a large exercise room. This home even features a serene meditation sanctuary with hardwood floors, huge windows, and plenty of natural light.

This custom-built Kris Hill Company is a blend of style, natural materials and genuine warmth that creates enduring everyday charm. The builders and designers worked closely with the homeowners create a welcoming and peaceful home. It will be a delight to the homeowners themselves and their guests alike.
